The smile says it all.
Every year on my birthday, I give myself an athletic challenge. This year it was to swim 60 laps, one for each year I've been alive.
This year, I announced my challenge on Facebook adding a little pressure but also opening myself up to fantastic support from friends I've met along the way. I was going to do the swim on my birthday, but we were under a heat advisory Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714395999708691383.post-82771812757598293102015-08-04T10:22:00.000-07:002015-08-08T10:41:24.292-07:00Annual birthday challenge to myself
I've had a lot of great accomplishments in my life. I've done a lot of cool things. One of the things I'm most proud of is that as an adult I re-taught myself to swim. A strong crawl which got me through several triathlons and a couple of 5-mile races off of Waikiki.
On my birthdays, I always do something athletic and I tie it to how long I've been alive. 50-minute run on my 50th Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714395999708691383.post-32501047515969429462015-07-08T11:36:00.000-07:002015-07-08T11:39:01.530-07:00Working from home is healthier
When I took this job which allows me to work from home frequently (No Oprah reruns!!), I knew it would be convenient, fun, smart, and I'd save a bundle on work clothes and gas. But I didn't realize it would give me such a good opportunity to be more healthy.
Instead of grabbing a yogurt and throwing some granola in it (my former healthy breakfast routine), today I took advantage of Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714395999708691383.post-61293453409722085652015-01-20T06:39:00.000-08:002015-01-20T09:36:30.886-08:00Holiday morning: A little meditation at the car wash
As my car started through the drive-through car wash while out on my Martin Luther King Jr. Day chores, I grabbed my camera to take a few still shots of the windshield.
I hit the video button instead and like what I got. A drive through this tunnel we can all relate to and a bright shiny clean car.
I like watching this with the sound down. It's a little like watching a fish tank. &Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714395999708691383.post-74375955554072649402015-01-03T17:41:00.000-08:002015-01-03T17:54:28.119-08:00Week No. 5 in my Year of Lunches
Happy New Year, everybody!
I'm well into my Year of Lunches that was kicked off with this Thanksgiving Day Facebook post. Today, I went out with Iris Green, my mother-in-law for her very favorite meal: Fish & Chips.

I did a lot of traveling this summer. Some for work, some personal. Vacations, family, conventions.
Early in my career, I thought travel was romantic. The people in my newsrooms who got to go on trips were doing cool stuff.
It certainly can be a great perk, but traveling for work is also tiring. And it takes me away from family, friends, routine. I'm not alone in that Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714395999708691383.post-48270122675142463092014-07-01T22:00:00.001-07:002014-07-01T22:23:21.693-07:00Beating the heat with a little shadow walking
When I was a kid, my mom used to announce on some summer days that "It's too hot to eat!"
I get that. But in Arizona in the summer, you have to eat eventually. It's really too hot to do anything. But you gotta live.
Early this evening, I was antsy. I had to move. I needed a little exercise. Haven't you heard? Sitting is the new cancer? And besides, my Jawbone UP told meUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1714395999708691383.post-31746902556026988892014-05-18T18:49:00.004-07:002014-05-19T17:38:19.480-07:00What color is your parachute? Or what will you make of your parachute?
For the last three years, six semesters to be precise, I have co-taught a 400-level required journalism course with John Dille, the wise man in the video above.
John and I have made a great team.
We teach a course about the Business & Future of Journalism. John is awesome talking about 'Big B' Business. My mother-in-law is fading. She has Alzheimer's.
It's OK. She's happy. She remembers her kids, when to go to meals, the walking route around her complex.
She remembers she loves a cup of tea, and R&B, and riding in the car. And most of all she remembers her husband, the love of her life who's been gone since 1996.
But a few weeks ago, she forgot me.

Sue Green is co-creator of SkinneePix app and co-owner of Pretty Smart
Women.
So this week I began a project, I began to get healthy by
using my Selfie. My company created an app for Selfies called SkinneePix that
allows you to take your picture and then take 5, 10 or 15 pounds off it if you
want to. When I took 15 pounds off I was astounded. Not only was it a small

This might seem a bit strange to be considered a Perfect Moment,
especially since it happened on the day I decided to take medical leave from
work to take care of my health.
I had been fighting the doctor’s advice for a while,
thinking I could “Superwoman” through just about anything. But I eventually
found that just because I might want to do something in my head and heart, the

Our friend Judy has lived with a terror in the form of a destructive dog for two years.
She's finally found a new home for the crazy canine, but she's been left with a house full of furniture that's been gnawed on or ripped open.
This weekend, we were able to come to the rescue by offering her some furniture. (And, no! We never offered to take that devil dog off her hands.)

Woman power. Well, woman with power tools.
We met Diana last year when we needed someone to help whip our house into shape before putting it on the market.
She's great. She's is truly handy. And she comes with a truck full of tools. And she welcomes help from the homeowner. Yes, getting moving. That's what I call this photo. I could also call it FacePalm.
My only New Year's resolution for most of my adult life has been a simple one. I believe in not setting myself up to fail. I'm not going to set a weight goal or a daily whatever target.

Working from home the other day, I took a quick break to zoom to the supermarket. It was a rare rainy day in Phoenix. All I really needed was some Diet Coke. So $122 later I also had juice, cleaning supplies, light bulbs, brownie and blueberry muffin mixes and everything I needed to make a house-warming pot roast.

Today I am beginning to mourn the loss of my mother. You
see, it started with me seeing a picture of my mother than had been taken more
than 12 years ago in New York City. She was so vibrant and connected in that
picture on that day. She was writing a note to those who had lost loved ones in the 9-11 attacks. It was so important to her on that day that she write something.

OK. Really. Does this photo need any description? Isn't this Perfect Moment enough?
Well, alright. Alexandra, aka Alster, is at Lolo's Chicken and Waffles in Phoenix. Most people there feel like this.
I remember exactly what I said to make her grin like this. This street scene in Fairbury, Nebraska, looks a lot like the town I remember driving into one dawn in the 1960s.
Twice this week as I drove to work - past Matt's Big Breakfast in downtown Phoenix - I smelled a smell from childhood. This smell was not like remembering Pixie Sticks or Sugar Daddy's or mom's meatloaf.
