Saving for Christmas one pocket of change at a time

Yes. That's $355.07.

Sue has this habit of putting all her change each night into a cup on her dresser. As the weeks and months go on, those cups are dumped into a big bag.

I never thought much about that trickle-down style of saving. I'm big on automatic payment into savings a account. ... yeah, boooring. And besides, coffee at my work costs $1.72 and it was just too easy to grab 6 quarters, 2 dimes and 2 pennies from her cache.

But I'm sold on her style now. And regret the coffee I funded from her fund. This weekend, we took that big bag into the grocery store and redeemed the coins.

We had:
2 dollars,
1,071 quarters,
773 dimes,
493 nickels,
1,806 pennies.

It was truly a Perfect Moment when the coin machine finally stopped counting and spat out a coupon we redeemed at the cashier. It was like going to the slots, but so much more fun in the end.

I'm sold.
Every little bit helps and this holiday season, perhaps, more than most....

I've already started adding to the cup for our Christmas Club Saving for 2009.

That's great! Makes me want to scour under my couch cushions.
